London tourist phone safety

You do not need to stop using your phone in London. The goal is to use it deliberately, especially in crowded or unfamiliar places.

Before you leave

Prepare a backup

  • Know your phone's IMEI and keep it somewhere else.
  • Make sure your device can be located and remotely locked.
  • Back up important photos and contacts.
  • Keep key travel contacts accessible without your phone.
While exploring

Use your phone deliberately

  • Put it away when you finish checking directions or messages.
  • Avoid walking while staring at the screen.
  • Be alert around roads, stations and crowded areas.
  • Do not leave it on a café or restaurant table unattended.
If you need directions

Stop somewhere safer

Instead of standing at the kerb looking down at your phone, move closer to a building or into a safer, less exposed position before checking the map.

If it happens

Act, don't chase

Get somewhere safe, lock the device, report the theft and contact your bank and mobile provider. If you are in immediate danger or have been hurt, call 999.
